Narcissus at the Mall
by Rhetta Akamatsu
Narcissus wakes in the morning
Slinks out of bed
Gazes in the mirror
His glory fills his head
“Think I’ll go to the mall
Buy a present just for me”
(Although he really can’t imagine
What a worthy one could be)
He doesn’t see the shoppers
Admiring this bright boy,
It’s only his reflection
In the stores that brings him joy
Suddenly, the huge mirror
In the photo shop ahead
Beckons to him madly
So he runs, and then stops dead
Staring at his beloved
Adorned in heavenly shades,
As all sounds fade to an echo,
Into the glass he fades.
The shoppers stop in wonder,
The sight arrests them all,
What a glorious photo,
“Narcissus, at the Mall”
